While branded as a part of E.P. Carrillo (EPC)’s Core Plus line of premium cigars, the EPC Old Virginia Tobacco Company 45th Anniversary cigar is a distinct blend composed by Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, the founder of EPC, exclusively for Old Virginia Tobacco Company.  Presiding over seven locations in Virginia, Old Virginia Tobacco Company (OVTC) has enjoyed a close relationship with Ernesto Perez-Carrillo (creator of Cuban-heritage brand La Gloria Cubana) and his renowned boutique company based in the Dominican Republic, culminating in this celebratory cigar.  The blend is proprietary, though featuring a maduro wrapper, and is presented as a single vitola in boxes of ten.

The Experience:

The EPC OVTC 45th Anniversary sports a slightly rustic, milk chocolate hued wrapper with an attractive sheen.  Chocolate, cinnamon, and sweet notes emerge from the wrapper, while the cold draw offers a pleasant sweetness with a perfect amount of resistance.  At first light, the cigar presents its notes at a mild-medium intensity.  Sugar cane and a very light note of chocolate greet the palate, and a slight cayenne note joins them on the sufficiently long finish.  The notably smooth retrohale makes these notes a bit more pronounced.

Settling into the first third, some of the notes slowly begin to evolve, and these will continue to do so into the final third; the sugar cane sweetness develops into a berry sweetness, while a vanilla note begins to emerge and accompany it.  The original chocolate note at the first light builds slightly, and the enticing cayenne remains on the finish.  The cigar reaches a medium flavor-intensity, though strength is still undetectable.  The second and final third bring an intensifying creaminess, complementing the delectable sweetness.  Light wood and baking spice notes appear in the second third and endure to the nub.  The cigar’s strength and flavor-intensity remain unchanged, making for an easy and agreeable hour and a half.  The room note is pleasant: cedary, spicy, sweet, and not overwhelming.

E.P. Carrillo cigars are staples in any well-stocked humidor, and their OVTC 45th Anniversary proves itself to be a great addition to any humidor.   This cigar is an attractive choice for beginners and experienced smokers alike, offering great construction, easy-going body and strength, and very approachable nuances and complexity.  For those new to maduros and maduro lovers alike, the E.P. Carrillo Old Virginia Tobacco Company 45th Anniversary would be a sound purchase.
